Scholarships and educational exchanges for Development between Canada and ASEAN countries.

On August 6, 2017, the Canadian Government introduced the Canada-ASEAN Scholarships and Educational Exchanges for Development (SEED) initiative. This program aims to grant students from ASEAN member states the opportunity to engage in short-term study or research at Canadian post-secondary institutions. The focus areas align with the goals outlined in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The primary objective of the Canada-ASEAN Scholarships and Educational Exchanges for Development program is to combat poverty in ASEAN's developing nations while advancing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. By providing scholarships and facilitating educational exchanges, the program strives to contribute to the accomplishment of all Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). SEED also fosters stronger connections between Canada and the Indo-Pacific region at a grassroots level.https://www.un.org/sustainabledevelopment/sustainable-development-goals/

SEED scholarships are made possible through collaborations between post-secondary institutions in Canada and their counterparts in ASEAN countries, established through student exchange agreements.

This program, administered by Global Affairs Canada’s International Scholarships Program, falls under the category of short-term exchange programs.

Eligibility criteria include the following:

A citizen of an ASEAN member state (Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, The Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, or Vietnam)

Enrolled full-time at a post-secondary institution in an ASEAN member state

Paying tuition fees to the home institution at the time of application and throughout the exchange duration

However, certain conditions make students ineligible for this scholarship, such as holding Canadian citizenship or permanent residency, participating in another Government of Canada-funded scholarship program, being enrolled in a Canadian post-secondary degree program, or having previously received a scholarship under the Canada-ASEAN Scholarships and Educational Exchanges for Development Program.

Canadian postsecondary institutions interested in hosting students must:

Be a Designated Learning Institution (DLI)

Hold a valid student exchange agreement with the student’s home institution, waiving tuition fees for scholarship recipients (specifically required for college or undergraduate study)
